3 Reasons why your girls should learn to code

In this tech-driven world, computer coding is still very much a male-dominated sector. And statistics has it that among those who have coding skills, 28.7% of them are women compared to 71.3% which are men. Now you must agree with me that this gap is just a little too wide, don’t you think? This goes to show that the ‘weaker vessel theory’ is not just a thing of the good old days, but even in the fast paced mordernism and technologically evolved times that we now live in, such theories are still being reflected.
And this really brings up the question, Why should your girl child learn to code? Here are 3 reasons:

1. The First Reason, Money!

You like money, we all like money! Money makes the world go round.
It is no longer news that the new money machine is the Technological sector. And if there’s one sector where the gender pay gap is more or less non-existent, it’s the tech sector. The gender pay gap has plagued the average female in most careers. As of 2021, the most recent figures place the average woman’s earnings at around 80% of the average man’s, though this varies significantly between occupations. But interestingly, research has found after graduation, male and female coders were earning the same salary. So encouraging our girl children to learn to code will increase their odds of landing a well-paying tech job. Ultimately this will eliminate the pay gap and boost the average woman’s pay significantly.

2. The Significant Work-life balance!

Most people are saying farewell to the 9-to-5 work and looking for a more flexible work approach. And hence the growing wave of remote work. Remote work gives room for flexibility, and this is just what the average lady would want in her career. The reason is that most women tend to cut down on their work hours after marriage and  conception, so they can have more time to attend to their family’s needs. Ladies who select programming careers have the choice of adaptability, as tech companies frequently support remote work plans which can lead to a good work/life balance.

3. It’s best to have your girls learn to code early-on!

A lot of research has been done on children’s ability to learn a language better at a younger age. The same can be said about learning to read and write code. By learning code at an early age, girls develop a better grasp of technology, which helps them find better solutions and manage failure. Teaching girls to code gives them the chance to experience the feeling of failure so that they learn not to give up when something doesn’t work out, but rather begin again. Learning to read and type in code gives girls the capacity to confront challenges head-on and learn from their mistakes.

How do you inspire your girls to get into coding?

  • Find examples of women they can aspire to be like who are already making it big in the world of coding – There are some powerful women doing ground-breaking things in the Tech world. You could also get them to watch some inspiring movies about women in tech like; Hidden figures.
  • Find a good coding academy that is open to and strives to see young girls advancing in coding by giving them the needed coding skills – We don’t mean to brag but we’re the best out there. Check out our online summer, easter or weekend code camps.
